A great, unmistakable fire broke out at the main campus of the University of Nairobi on January 15, 2025, destroying Mahatma Gandhi Wing, which is of historical value.

So the fire reportedly started in the kitchen of Arziki Restaurant, which is inside the building, and then spread around to other parts of the whole complex, including parts of the administration offices.

Stephen Okal, the Commanding Officer Police Division (OCPD) stated that the fire was first quenched after midnight. Around 5 a.m. on January 16, it erupted, forcing the fire brigade to re-appear, but the process was not smooth. None of the members were injured, so the amount of damage is considerable, with several losses reaching millions.

It is a famous near-administration block structure since the Mahatma Gandhi Wing is a historical building very nearby. Seeing this building disappear is not only physical but also emotional pain for the university society, including the alumni.

This took place just as the students were readying for the incoming tests, so their already disrupted environment was thrown into deeper disarray. The school officials still have not made public a detailed statement on the effects of the fire on academic activities and what they will do to restore the damaged facilities.

The precise cause of the fire is being probed. Fire experts will likely release a report that the university community and the public are waiting for. They also want to be briefed on the actions that will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
