Just In: Police Now Claim Morara Kebaso Was Spreading False Information About President Ruto
On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, prominent lawyer and activist Morara Kebaso who was arrested by detectives in Kahawa Sukari was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts for cyber harassment charges.
The charges stemmed from a controversial social media post in which Kebaso accused President William Ruto of exploiting businessman David Langat for campaign financing.
According to the charge sheet, the posts, shared via Kebaso's X (formerly Twitter) account, allegedly contained false information accusing President Ruto of tricking Langat into taking out large loans for campaign purposes, only to later leave him financially vulnerable.
The activist claimed that Langat's properties were being auctioned by banks and that Ruto himself was allegedly involved in acquiring the repossessed assets.
Kebaso, alongside unnamed accomplices, was charged under Section 27 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act for knowingly spreading false information.
The case has garnered significant attention as Kebaso’s arrest comes amid increasing tensions between the government and outspoken activists.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Kebaso’s legal team faced difficulties accessing him at Nairobi Regional Headquarters following his arrest, raising questions about the transparency of the process.
The case is expected to proceed in the coming days, as the activist's legal team prepares to contest the charges.
Public reactions have been mixed, with some supporting Kebaso's freedom of expression, while others have criticized his actions as reckless and defamatory.
As the legal battle unfolds, more details surrounding the case and its implications for free speech in Kenya are expected to emerge.
