Safaricom Introduces Ksh1 Airtime Purchase Option Via M-Pesa

Safaricom PLC has introduced a new update to its airtime purchase policy, allowing customers to buy airtime for as little as Ksh1 using the M-Pesa mobile payment service. This move marks a significant shift from the previous minimum purchase amount of Ksh5, enabling users with limited funds to easily top up their mobile phones.
The update, which took effect on September 16, 2024, was announced by Safaricom through its social media platforms, encouraging customers to test the new feature. The company stated, “Hata shilingi ni pesa! Sasa unaweza kununua Safaricom airtime ya kuanzia shilingi moja ukitumia M-Pesa,” which translates to "Even one shilling is worth something! You can now buy Safaricom airtime from Ksh1 using M-Pesa."

This update highlights Safaricom's commitment to making their services more accessible, especially for customers with lower budgets. By lowering the minimum airtime purchase to Ksh1, Safaricom aims to reach a broader customer base, particularly those who rely on smaller daily expenditures. This approach is also expected to generate additional revenue from these micro-transactions, allowing the company to cater to a wider audience.
The change comes shortly after Safaricom adjusted its popular reverse call service, limiting it to two free calls per day. Customers will now be charged 50 cents for the third reverse call request. Safaricom's continued focus on customer-centric innovations underscores its dedication to improving user experience and increasing convenience for millions of its customers across Kenya.
