The University of Nairobi (UoN) recently faced significant backlash after announcing a Ksh50 per hour pay rate for students participating in its work-study program. This program, designed to help vulnerable students earn a modest income while gaining work experience, sparked widespread criticism for what many perceive as exploitation.

The work-study program at UoN is intended to offer students part-time employment opportunities within the university. By working in various departments, students can earn money to support their education and daily needs. However, the announcement that students would only be paid Ksh50 per hour drew ire from the public, who argue that this amount is insufficient, especially given the current economic climate in Kenya.

Critics took to social media, expressing their discontent with the university's decision. Many pointed out that Ksh50 per hour, which translates to Ksh400 for an eight-hour workday, is far below what is necessary to sustain even the most basic living expenses. For comparison, some noted that construction laborers earn significantly more than this amount, highlighting the disparity in wages.

The university defended the program, stating that it is primarily aimed at helping needy students who are registered under the 2024/2025 academic year. Priority is given to those who have been identified as vulnerable or in need by their respective Assistant Dean of Students' Office. However, the controversy surrounding the low pay continues to fuel debates about fair compensation for student labor.

While the work-study program remains a valuable opportunity for many students, the criticism it has garnered underscores the broader issue of student exploitation and the need for better financial support systems in Kenya’s higher education institutions.
